Brazil's retail sales rose by just 0.1 percent from a month earlier in May of 2022, following a downwardly revised 0.8 percent gain in April and largely missing market expectations of a 1 percent increase. It was the fifth consecutive month of increases in retail activity, but the weakest performance for the month since 2019. Sales were up in 6 of the 8 categories surveyed, led by books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (5.5%); pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (3.6%) and textiles, clothing and footwear (3.5%). Conversely, those of furniture and household appliances (-3.0%) and other articles for personal and domestic use (-2.2%) declined. On an annual basis, retail sales decreased by 0.2 percent, slowing from a 4.5 percent surge in the prior month and below market forecasts of a 2.6 percent rise.

Brazil April Retail Sales Growth Above Expectations
Brazil's retail sales rose 0.9 percent from a month earlier in April of 2022, following a revised 1.4 percent gain in March and beating market expectations of a 0.4 percent increase. It was the fourth consecutive month of increases, with the biggest increases were seen for sales of furniture and household appliances (2.3 percent), textiles, clothing, and footwear (1.7 percent), pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, and perfumery articles (0.4 percent) and other pieces of personal and domestic use (0.1 percent). On an annual basis, retail sales went up 4.5 percent, accelerating from a 4.0 percent increase in March and higher than the 2.6 percent gain predicted by economists.
