Meanwhile, expenditure on equipment, plant and machinery grew 1.2 percent. Through the year to the first quarter, private capital expenditure increased by 4.5 percent.

Australia Q4 Private Capex Rises Less than Expected
Total new capital expenditure in Australia rose 1.1% quarter-on-quarter in the three months to December 2021, reversing a decrease of 2.2% in the preceding quarter but falling well below expectations for a 2.6% gain. Spending on equipment, plant and machinery fell 0.1% QoQ in the December quarter, while buildings and structures investments increased by 2.2%. While firms may not have grown investment in the fourth quarter of last year, they plan to lift capital spending in the years ahead based on estimates.
