The annual inflation rate in Chile surged to 14.1 percent in August of 2022, picking up from a 13.1 percent jump in July amid a weak peso and soaring energy costs, marking the sharpest increase in consumer prices since June of 1992. Prices rose faster for food and non-alcoholic beverages (21.7 percent vs 19.4 percent in July), transportation (27.8 percent vs 26.4 percent), housing and utilities (10.8 percent vs 10.7 percent) and recreation and culture (16.9 percent vs 16.4 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 1.2 percent, easing from the 1.4 percent gain in the previous month but surpassing expectations of a 1 percent rise.

The annual inflation rate in Chile surged to 13.1 percent in July of 2022, accelerating from 12.5 percent in the prior month. It was the highest reading since March of 1994, amid soaring costs of energy and the Chilean peso reaching record lows. Prices advanced faster for transportation (26.4 percent vs 24.4 percent in June), food and non-alcoholic beverages (19.4 percent vs 18.5 percent), housing and utilities (10.7 percent vs 9.9 percent), and recreation and culture (16.4 percent vs 15.4 percent). The core inflation rate rose to 10.3 percent from 9.9 percent in the previous month. On a monthly basis, the CPI rose by 1.4 percent, compared to the 0.9 percent rise in the previous month and surpassing expectations of a 1.15 percent increase.

It was the highest reading since June of 1994, as prices advanced faster for food and non-alcoholic beverages (18.5 percent vs 17.1 percent in May), transportation (244 percent vs 22.3 percent), and housing and utilities (9.9 percent vs 9.6 percent). The core inflation rate rose 9.9 percent, picking up from a 9 percent rise in the previous month. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up by 0.9 percent, easing from a 1.2 percent rise in May.
