Imports to the Philippines jumped 31.4% yoy to USD 11.99 billion in May 2022, after an upwardly revised 29.4% growth in April. The latest print was the 16th straight month of growth in arrivals, and the steepest pace since last December, amid robust domestic demand as COVID-19 situation improved further. Arrivals gained for all commodity groups: mineral fuels, lubricants (128.7%), cereal and cereal preparations (65.7%), iron & steel (64.2%), transport equipment (51.1%), plastics in primary and non-primary forms (17.3%), telecommunication equipment and electrical machinery (13.0%), electronic products (12.7%), industrial machinery (11.4%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (2.4%), and other food and live animals (0.3%). Imports went up from China (3.4%), South Korea (89.4%), Japan (31.5%), Indonesia (50.4%), Taiwan (63.8%), the US (12.2%), Singapore (18.3%), Thailand (20.2%), Malaysia (45.3%), Vietnam (3.2%), the ASEAN countries (35.4%), and the EU (58.0%).

Philippines Imports Extend Double-Digit Growth for 15th Month
Imports to the Philippines rose by 22.8% yoy to USD 10.90 billion in April 2022, after a marginally revised 27.7% growth in March. The latest print was the 15th straight month of growth in arrivals and the 12th consecutive month of double-digit growth, as domestic demand stayed robust on improving COVID-19 situation. Arrivals gained mineral fuels, lubricants (133.5%), transport equipment (44.2%), cereal and cereal preparations (39.3%), iron & steel (21.9%), plastics in primary and non-primary forms (10.4%), other food and live animals (4.1%), and electronic products (1.7%). On the flip side, purchases shrank for both industrial machinery (-4.6%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (-2.9%). Imports went up from China (1.0%), South Korea (108.9%), Indonesia (63.2%), Japan (3.0%), Singapore (33.2%), the US (8.7%), Thailand (7.5%), Taiwan (17.9%), the ASEAN countries (31.9%), and the EU (14.0%); while fell from Vietnam (-1.8%), Hong Kong (-16.1%), Germany (-1.5%), and India (-4.4%).
