New Zealand’s current account deficit widened to NZD 7.26 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021 from a NZD 2.83 billion deficit in the corresponding period of the previous year, compared to market expectations of a NZD 6.2 billion gap. The goods deficit widened to NZD 2.9 billion from NZD 0.4 billion a year earlier, the services gap widened to NZD 2 billion from NZD 0.9 billion, and the primary income shortfall rose to NZD 2.1 billion from NZD 1.3 billion. Meanwhile, the secondary income deficit increased marginally to NZD 0.23 billion from NZD 0.21 billion. Considering the full 2021, New Zealand recorded a current account cap of 20.2 billion, totaling 5.8 percent of its GDP.
