In Switzerland, the consumer confidence survey is conducted every year, in the months of January, April, July and October. Around 1000 households are questioned for State Secretariat for Economic Affairs regarding their subjective evaluation of the economic situation, financial situation of the household in question, inflation, job security etc. Generally consumer confidence is high when the unemployment rate is low and GDP growth is high. The SECO consumer confidence for Switzerland fell to -18 in the second quarter of 2022, the lowest in one year, from a revised 3 in the previous period. Consumers’ sentiment strongly deteriorated for the future general economic situation (-29.4 vs 21.9 in Q1), while pessimism increased for future financial situation (-23.8 vs -1.5), mainly due to a surge in consumer prices due to the war in Ukraine. At the same time, fewer consumers are willing to make major purchases (-31.9 vs -19.7).

Swiss Consumers Turn Pessimistic
The SECO consumer confidence for Switzerland fell to -3.6 in the first three months of 2022, the lowest in three quarters, from a downwardly revised 3.5 in the previous period. Consumers were less optimistic regarding the future economic situation (21 vs 43.4) and turned more pessimistic regarding the future financial situation (-3.2 vs -0.8), mainly due to the surge in consumer prices which hurts the purchasing power of Swiss households. At the same time, consumers are less willing to do big purchases (-22.7 vs -18.5).
