Total construction work done in Australia unexpectedly fell by 3.8% on a quarter-on-quarter seasonally-adjusted terms in the three months to June 2022, missing market expectations of a 0.9% rise and following a downwardly revised 0.3% fall in the first quarter. It was the second straight quarter of decline in construction activity and the steepest pace since the September quarter of 2016, due to decreases in building work done (-4.6%), residential (-6.8%), non-residential (-1.1%), and engineering work (-2.7%). On a geographical basis, total construction work done dropped in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania, while increased in Northern Territory, and Australian Capital Territory. Through the year to the second quarter, construction output dropped by 4.3 percent.
